Home EV Charging Installation Perth

Electric vehicles are transforming the way Perth families get around. With EV ownership growing rapidly across suburbs like Joondalup, Quinns Rocks, Yanchep and Scarborough, the demand for safe, reliable home EV charging installations has never been higher. Prolite Power and Air are your local EV charger installation experts.

Charging your EV at home using a standard 10-amp powerpoint is slow, inefficient, and not ideal for modern EV batteries. A professionally installed Level 2 home charging station (using a 32-amp dedicated circuit) can charge most EVs four to eight times faster — meaning your car is ready to go every morning without stress.

Why Install a Dedicated Home EV Charger?

While you can plug your EV into a standard household outlet, there are significant advantages to upgrading to a dedicated home EV charging unit:

  • Much faster charging: Level 2 chargers (7–22kW) charge 4–8x faster than a standard 10A outlet
  • Safer for your electrical system: Dedicated circuits prevent overloading and reduce fire risk
  • Smart features: Many modern chargers allow scheduled charging (take advantage of off-peak tariffs)
  • Solar integration: Smart chargers can be configured to charge from your solar panels
  • Adds home value: EV charging infrastructure is increasingly valued by buyers
  • Better for your battery: Controlled Level 2 charging is gentler on lithium-ion batteries long-term

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions Perth EV owners ask before booking.

Can I charge my EV with my solar panels?

Absolutely — and it’s one of the best combinations available in Perth given our solar irradiance. A solar-integrated smart charger (like the Zappi) automatically prioritises excess solar generation to charge your EV before drawing from the grid. We integrate with existing solar systems and configure everything for your panel size and usage patterns.

What's the difference between a 7kW and 22kW charger?

A 22kW three-phase charger requires three-phase power at your property. Most Perth homes are single-phase, so 7kW is the standard recommendation. We’ll confirm during your site visit.

Can you install in an apartment or strata property?

Yes, though it’s more complex than a standard home install. Strata installations require body corporate approval and specific load management and billing configurations. We have experience with Perth strata buildings and can provide supporting documentation for your strata committee. Contact us to discuss your building’s specific situation.

Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger in WA?

Yes — EV chargers require a dedicated circuit (typically 32A) hardwired to your switchboard. All such work must be done by a licensed WA electrician. We’re fully WA-licensed and issue a compliance certificate with every installation.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Not always. Many Perth homes have sufficient capacity. However, older switchboards with ceramic fuses or limited circuit space often need upgrading. We assess this during your free site visit and tell you honestly before any work begins. If an upgrade is needed, we quote it separately — never as a hidden mid-installation surprise.

How long does installation take?

Most standard residential EV charger installations take 2–4 hours — covering the cable run, mounting, connection, and commissioning. If a switchboard upgrade is also needed, add another 2–3 hours. We give you an accurate time estimate with your quote so you can plan your day.
